Effective Stretches For Foot Muscles

People who enjoy running are generally aware of the importance of having strong and stable feet. This can be accomplished by frequently performing stretching techniques that are designed to keep the feet flexible and strong. The feet are comprised of different types of muscles. Shorter muscles are known as intrinsic muscles, and are found inside the foot. They are responsible for moving the feet, and providing stability. A simple and effective movement known as toe curling can help to improve overall foot function. Additionally, the toes may become stronger when an effort is made to keep the big toe on the floor while lifting the other toes. Research has indicated the ankle will benefit when heel lifts are performed. If you would like more information about the importance of stretching the feet, or suggestions on specific foot stretches, please consult with a podiatrist.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Central Ohio Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Where Is Pain from Cuboid Syndrome Located?

There are several bones that are located in the middle of the foot. They are referred to as the cuboid bones, and cuboid syndrome may develop as a result of inflammation. This may come from repetitive motions that can occur from frequently participating in specific sporting activities, or if the ankle is sprained or injured. Research has indicated that this may be a common injury among ballet dancers. The pain is often felt on the outer edge of the foot, and many patients notice there is discomfort in the middle of the foot. The foot can appear swollen, and walking may be difficult. Treatment typically begins with ceasing the activity that caused this condition to occur, and mild relief may be found when specific foot stretches are performed. If you feel you may have cuboid syndrome, it is strongly suggested that you seek professional advice from a podiatrist who can guide you toward the correct treatment options.

Cuboid syndrome, also known as cuboid subluxation, occurs when the joints and ligaments near the cuboid bone in the foot become torn. If you have cuboid syndrome, consult with one of our podiatrists from Central Ohio Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Cuboid syndrome is a common cause of lateral foot pain, which is pain on the outside of the foot. The condition may happen suddenly due to an ankle sprain, or it may develop slowly overtime from repetitive tension through the bone and surrounding structures.

Causes

The most common causes of cuboid syndrome include:

  • Injury – The most common cause of this ailment is an ankle sprain.
  • Repetitive Strain – Tension placed through the peroneus longus muscle from repetitive activities such as jumping and running may cause excessive traction on the bone causing it to sublux.
  • Altered Foot Biomechanics – Most people suffering from cuboid subluxation have flat feet.

Symptoms

A common symptom of cuboid syndrome is pain along the outside of the foot which can be felt in the ankle and toes. This pain may create walking difficulties and may cause those with the condition to walk with a limp.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of cuboid syndrome is often difficult, and it is often misdiagnosed. X-rays, MRIs and CT scans often fail to properly show the cuboid subluxation. Although there isn’t a specific test used to diagnose cuboid syndrome, your podiatrist will usually check if pain is felt while pressing firmly on the cuboid bone of your foot.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are ice therapy, rest, exercise, taping, and orthotics.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Delaware and Westerville, OH . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Gout Can Produce Extreme Pain

Patients who experience the medical condition that is known as gout may feel severe pain and discomfort that is associated with the condition. In severe cases, the pain may be so extreme, the weight of a blanket or sheet may be intolerable. It is defined as an ailment that produces crystals which lodge in the joints of the big toe. It occurs as a result of elevated uric acid levels that are found in the bloodstream. This can happen when foods that are eaten have a high level of purines. Foods that fall into this category can include red meat, shellfish, and drinks that contain sugar. If gout attacks are a frequent occurrence, a change in dietary habits may be beneficial in preventing them in the future. This can consist of drinking plenty of water daily, and eating fresh vegetables. If you would like additional information about how to prevent gout attacks, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can provide you with proper information.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Foot Pain Can Develop from Several Reasons

Each foot consists of several bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons, and is considered to be one of the most complex parts of the body. When foot pain occurs, it may be a result of improper foot function that can be caused for a variety of reasons. These can consist of wearing shoes that do not fit properly, which can affect the mechanics of the feet. Additionally, genetic factors may play a significant role in existing foot pain. Heel pain can be indicative of a condition that is known as heel spurs. It is defined as a bony growth that develops underneath the heel and can cause pain and discomfort. A bunion will typically form on the bottom of the big toe and appears as a large growth. Another form of foot pain can be the result of an ankle sprain, which may occur from falling, or from stepping off of a curb unexpectedly. If you are experiencing any type of foot pain, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can properly treat any foot conditions.

These can consist of numbness, tingling, and muscle cramps, in addition to pain and discomfort. Nerve damage can possibly be caused by poor circulation, in addition to varicose veins and blood clots. Patients may find relief when specific exercises are performed, and compression stockings are worn that are designed for painful, swollen legs. If you feel you have symptoms of this condition, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist to learn about the best treatment options for you.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.
