Morton’s Neuroma Causes Burning Pain

Morton’s neuroma refers to the thickening or scarring of a nerve in the ball of the foot. This condition typically affects the nerve located between the third and fourth toes. When the nerve is compressed or irritated, the nerve tissue can thicken and scar, causing a variety of painful symptoms. If left untreated, nerve damage may become permanent. Symptoms of Morton’s neuroma include burning pain in the ball of the foot, tingling, numbness, and the feeling of walking on a pebble. Morton’s Neuroma

Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Morton’s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.

What Increases the Chances of Having Morton’s Neuroma?

  • Ill-fitting high heels or shoes that add pressure to the toe or foot
  • Jogging, running or any sport that involves constant impact to the foot
  • Flat feet, bunions, and any other foot deformities

Morton’s neuroma is a very treatable condition. Orthotics and shoe inserts can often be used to alleviate the pain on the forefront of the feet. In more severe cases, corticosteroids can also be prescribed. Healthy Tips for Prolonged Standing at Work

If you work a job that requires you to stand for prolonged periods of time, you may be more at risk of developing various foot and ankle problems. Fortunately, you can take several measures to reduce this risk. When standing at work, it is suggested that you change your position with slight movements frequently. Doing short, simple foot and ankle stretches, such as rolling a ball underneath each foot or flexing and extending your feet can help maintain strength, flexibility, and circulation in your lower limbs. You should also wear properly-fitted, comfortable, and supportive shoes and socks, and stand on an anti-fatigue mat if your workplace provides one. If possible, you should also alternate sitting, standing, and walking approximately every half hour and limit the total amount of time that you stand to no more than half of the work day. Working on Your Feet

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

Grading the Severity of Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries. They can occur when the ligaments that connect the bones and stabilize the ankle joint become overstretched or partially/fully torn. In a Grade I sprain, ligaments are stretched, while in Grade II & III sprains, ligaments are partially or fully torn, respectively. Grade II & III sprains are usually more painful and typically require more extensive treatment than a Grade I sprain. Symptoms of an ankle sprain vary depending on the severity, and may include pain, swelling, and the inability to put any or all weight on the affected ankle. More severe sprains may make it difficult or even impossible to walk, and there may be some bruising due to broken blood vessels under the skin. Since improperly healed sprains can lead to chronic ankle instability and additional sprains, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist right away to receive proper treatment.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankylosing Spondylitis and Heel Pain

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine, but did you know that it can also affect the heels? AS can cause inflammation in not only joints, but also in entheses - points where ligaments and tendons attach to bones. Inflamed entheses result in enthesitis, and a common location for this problem in people with AS is the heel. The Achilles tendon at the back of the heel and the plantar fascia ligament along the bottom of the foot can both become inflamed, causing sharp pain and difficulty walking. If you have AS, it is suggested that you stay vigilant of any foot or ankle symptoms. If you notice these, a podiatrist can help you manage your heel pain.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Healthy Foot Tips for Hiking

Whether you are heading out for a quick day hike or plan on camping and hiking for a few days, there are measures that can be implemented to ensure that your feet are up to the task. One of the most common conditions that can wreak havoc on the feet during a hike is developing an ingrown toenail. Having long toenails can cause discomfort, but cutting the nails too short and having them grow into the skin can be excruciating. The best advice to help prevent ingrown toenails is to cut the toenails straight across and not too short before you even leave for a hike. The next step is to make sure that your shoes or hiking boots fit properly by ensuring the back of the heel sits tight to the back of the shoe, but the toes can still wiggle.
