Facts About Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot, also known as tinea pedis, is a common ailment caused by a fungal infection. It typically causes a skin rash characterized by itching, peeling, and cracking of the skin between the toes and on the sole of the foot. Since athlete’s foot is highly contagious, it can easily be spread to other people and other parts of your own body. Walking barefoot in swimming pool locker rooms and gym showers are common ways to obtain it. The fungi then continue to breed in your shoes, which can provide a moist, warm environment where the fungi thrive. Sharing towels or clothing that has been infected is another way it spreads. The three main types of athlete’s foot infections are toe web, moccasin type, and vesicular. Toe web infection usually forms between the toes. Moccasin type infection starts with soreness and spreads to the sole and heel, and in severe cases can infect toenails. Vesicular infection erupts into blisters, usually on the sole of your foot. Treatment of athlete’s foot depends on which type of infection you have developed. Ceasing the spread as soon as possible is essential, therefore, it is a good idea to immediately consult a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Central Ohio Comprehensive Foot Care.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Athlete’s Foot: The Sole Story

Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, can be an extremely contagious foot infection. It is commonly contracted in public changing areas and bathrooms, dormitory style living quarters, around locker rooms and public swimming pools, or anywhere your feet often come into contact with other people.

Solutions to Combat Athlete’s Foot

  • Hydrate your feet by using lotion
  • Exfoliate
  • Buff off nails
  • Use of anti-fungal products
  • Examine your feet and visit your doctor if any suspicious blisters or cuts develop

Athlete’s foot can cause many irritating symptoms such as dry and flaking skin, itching, and redness. Some more severe symptoms can include bleeding and cracked skin, intense itching and burning, and even pain when walking. In the worst cases, Athlete’s foot can cause blistering as well. Calluses develop as the result of continued pressure on the skin that causes it to harden as a way of protecting itself. Anyone can develop a callus, regardless of their age. While calluses are not particularly dangerous, and not contagious, they can be both unsightly and uncomfortable. In many cases, they do not require medical attention. Some home remedies, such as using a pumice stone to file them down and rubbing in creams that help to soften them, are common. Unlike blisters and corns that form by rubbing against something solid, like a hard shoe, calluses are caused by pressure. If a bone in the foot is out of alignment, such as from a bunion or metatarsal malformation, a callus may form in the area. They also can be caused by poorly fitting shoes, walking, running, and other repetitive exercises. They commonly develop on the feet and heels, usually near a bony prominence. If a callus becomes painful and uncomfortable, it might be wise to see a podiatrist for an evaluation and safe removal procedure.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Central Ohio Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Which Orthotics Are Right for You?

Runners and other people who are active in sports may find that their feet ache at the end of the day. One way to alleviate some of the pain is to invest in orthotics. Typical shoe liners may provide extra cushioning, but if you put miles on your feet each day, as many runners do, it is worth looking into which orthotics would best suit your feet. In cases of avid runners, an insole can be custom-made by a podiatrist to fit your foot. These inserts will likely be made from synthetic, high-performing materials that provide extra support and cushioning. The average lifespan of such orthotics is 400 to 600 miles, which is about the same time as your running shoes generally last. When fitting you with orthotics, your podiatrist will also consider the way you pronate and if you have flat feet, high arches, or any other foot problems. All these factors will help a podiatrist determine the best orthotics for your feet.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact one of our podiatrists from Central Ohio Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

Pain Across the Top of the Foot

Tendonitis, or inflammation of a tendon, is common among runners as well as others who do a lot of running during sports activities. A particular brand of tendonitis that occurs across the top of the foot is typical of overuse. It is known as extensor tendonitis, and affects the three tendons that connect the leg bones to the bones in the feet that allow you to walk and run. Symptoms include aching pain that worsens through activity. Some swelling may occur, and curling the toes usually adds to the pain as the tendons are stretched. Besides overuse, other factors to address include your footwear and training regime. Running shoes that fit poorly and are tied too tightly contribute to the pressure on the top of the foot. Also, changing your training program to include running up and down hills can negatively affect the extensor tendons. The first action to take against extensor tendonitis is to stop the activity. For other treatment options, it is wise to see a podiatrist who will be able to evaluate the severity of your condition and provide the appropriate solutions.

Metatarsus in Your Child

Some children are born with a condition known as metatarsus adductus, which is a turning inward of the feet. The inside of the foot appears caved in and the outside more rounded. While it may be alarming to look at, this condition generally diminishes in a few years. Although no cause has been determined for metatarsus adductus, some experts believe it to be a result of the fetus being tightly packed inside the uterus before birth. The metatarsus is a collection of bones in the midfoot, known as the five metatarsals. These bones connect the toes to the heel. A podiatrist can properly examine your baby’s feet and determine which form of metatarsus is present. In flexible metatarsus, the foot can be straightened manually, and some stretching exercises may help. The condition may continue until the child is between 1 and 2 years old. In non-flexible metatarsus, the foot stays in a curved position. In this case, fittings for braces and special shoes may be required. In rare cases, surgery to reposition the foot may be suggested. A podiatrist can monitor your child’s case and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of Central Ohio Comprehensive Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
